The energy is electric and the excitement is palpable, creating a buzz of conversation that fills the air. The anticipation and hype is absolutely massive as we enter the Premiere Viewing of John John Florence and Blake Vincent Kueny’s, View From a Blue Moon.
A sea of sponsors, brand reps, and epic surf enthusiasts flood the La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas, CA to see the megastar surfer, John John Florence, rip, carve, and get absolutely barreled in the biggest surf film known to date. Kueny and John John teamed up once before to create “Done” which broke an iTunes record for highest sales from an action sports segment. Their success didn’t stop there as they won Surfer’s “Movie of the Year” at the 2013 Surfer Poll Awards.
Since then, there have been rumors of the badass duo immediately starting to work on their next venture. View from a Blue Moon was an elite project from the beginning, starting with the cast of John John and his closest friends, who just so happen to be world-class surfers, including Jamie O’Brien, who spoke with Scrimshaw a couple weeks ago. Together they had a true creative vision shooting the first ever surf film entirely using 4K and RED cameras, with an absolutely epic soundtrack, all being narrated by the amazing John C. Reilly. Between John John’s mega successes as a surfer and heading to WSL events, he was able to escape the circuit to drop in on some of the most remote, beautiful, and stunning surf locations that most can only dream about.
View from a Blue Moon starts as a beautifully visual journey transforming John John from a grom, into the man he is today. This opening sequence shows John John’s upbeat and exuberant personality while Jack Johnson is playing in the background, creating true nostalgia. The music fades, thunder claps, and John John appears as a man dropping in on some true blue monsters. While the masses may not fully comprehend the sheer genius of his full rotations, epic rail rides, and his ability to get super deep barrels, they will appreciate the flow of the movie and how visually stunning it is from start to finish.
Between the conversation, the people, and the premiere of View from a Blue Moon, the event was overall an incredible success (with an after party to match). The total experience really made me appreciate what it’s like to be part of a community that dances on water.
We want to give a big thanks to Nixon for the incredible JJF Nixon Capsule Collection. The gear is amazing and will most definitely be put to use. Also a big shout out to Emerald City Surf, SPY Optics, Brain Farm, and La Paloma Theatre, you all made the night something special.
